If want to be a mixtape DJ, there are several different ways to get your mixtapes on the market. You can start by selling out of your trunk to your local music stores. Or you can sell them hand-to-hand to individual consumers. Another option is submitting your mixtapes to a mixtape website like http://www.hiphopxrated.com.
Unfortunately, due to bootlegging and free download sites, the going rate for wholesale mixtapes is $1.00-$2.00 per mixtape. Three years ago the wholesale rate was about $3.00-$5.00 per mixtape.
Some stores and mixtape websites will make payment upfront as in the form of a COD shipment, and some only allow consignment. It is up to you how you want to do business and your relationship with that particular store or mixtape website.
For new mixtape DJs, it is very difficult to break through. Most mixtape website do not offer new DJs that are not established in the industry the opportunity to sell their product on their websites. We have found that www.hiphopxrated.com seems to be the most “DJ-friendly” website and posts information on how to submit your mixtapes to them. They also have other opportunities for new DJ’s available on their sites (i.e. special pages, DJ networks, etc.).
